The Azalea Walk

Sponsored by the Azalea Garden Club

Take a walk through a path of azalea species including native deciduous, compact Kurume, dwarf Indica, and stately Formosa varieties. The Azalea Walk is an explosion of color in the Spring.

The Azalea Garden Club recently volunteered to maintain this area. They also obtained funding to rework the entrance so that it now aligns with the Touch and Smell Garden. The path was recently repaved and is handicapped accessible through a generous grant from the Georgia Rehabilitation Institute.

The Azalea Walk leads to a lovely Gazebo overlooking a panorama of trees labeled for identification. This first Arboretum in Augusta was established in 1987 and features trees that can be grown in the Augusta area. Most recently in 2020, Pendleton King Park was granted Level 1 Arboretum status by ArbNet of the Morton Arboretum which recognizes Arboreta worldwide.

The Gazebo

Established in Honor of Bert Botts

Barbara Botts established the attractive Gazebo overlooking the Arboretum in memory of her husband, Bert Botts. Mr. Botts was a long time PKP Foundation member and was responsible for much of the early work in the park.  This lovely Gazebo overlooks a panorama of trees in the Pendleton King Park Arboretum.   The Arboretum was established in 1987 and features identified trees that can be grown in the Augusta area. Many of the trees in the Arboretum were donated in honor or in memory of someone by organizations or individuals. An expanse of lawn was seeded to give the arboretum an Old English theme. The Pendleton King Park Foundation together with the City of Augusta have a working partnership that has repeatedly broken new ground in the advancement of urban forestry in Augusta.
